Bobber finished....?
08/31/11 at 10:49:40

been doing this bike for about 5 or 6 months now, and Im pretty pleased with how it turned out.

my neighbor found this bike torn apart and boxed up next to a dumpster at work, they were going to scrap it but he brought it home to part out. I ended up taking it over and rebuilding the entire thing into a bobber.

this is how everything looked when I brought it home

spent several hours assembling the engine and bike, surprised to see EVERYthing there

I have lots of pics of the build, but no one wants to see that!!

Sick build. Looks like you know your way around (re)building engines.

If I may ask, what did you end up spending in total? Good that all the parts came with the bike.

Let's hope this Bobber project turns out alright.

I figure I have about $2,000 into it by now.

I bought the bike off my neighbor in boxes of parts, taking the gamble, for $200.

then all the other stuff...

- paying to get the chains welded and drilled ($70)
- new rings ($150)
- 2 gasket sets ($180)
- lots of paint (no idea)
- powdercoated frame ($100)
- seat ($180)
- engine cover ($40)
- vegas bars ($40)
- battery ($50)
- engine honing ($15)
- engine bolt kit ($50)

thats all I can think of, then you have to include hundreds of dollars in oil, filters, beer, shop supplies, cleaners, polishers, etc.

but I figure the bike cost me between $1500 and $2000 to build, which is on the high side but I paid a lot for a lot of stuff to get done.

runs like a dream! hardly any backfiring, pipe sounds awesome. It rides kinda hard, its excellent around town, but once on the highway it gets a little scary.

thanks! it was actually boxed up for 8 years because someone took it a part, and they were throwing it out and my neighbor just decided to bring it home rather than dumpster it.

That pretty much qualifies as the best trash picking I've seen. That's awesome. I really dig your bike. Have fun on that thing.

thanks guys.

just did an oil change, and now I notice it burns a considerably lot of oil on startup. lots of smoke, but dissipates after a minute or two of warming up.

any ideas??

When installing the rings, did you offset the gaps? (gap in rings are not supposed to all line up when installed)
Are you sure the rings are the right size? (oversized if rebored)
If these things are right, then I'd have to say the rings were not properly broken in, or they are just not broken in yet.
I'm leaning towards the rings not being oversized. You mentioned that the engine was honed. Even when rings are properly broken in, there should be no blowby during warmup.

when I installed them I used a 10 o clock, 2 o clock, 6 o clock formation. I broke them in by idling them for a min then letting them cool, idling a bit higher, than cool, more throttle, cool, oil change, etc.

I rode it for around 300km before my first real oil change, and after doing so it began to smoke on startup. had a motorcycle mechanic who owns his own shop measure my cylinder, and order proper rings. also reads 150psi
