Savage Vs. XS650?
08/29/11 at 16:34:08

What are the performance differences, whatever they may be, between a 650 single and a 650 parallel twin?  I might have the chance to pick up an XS650 for dirt cheap, and was wondering what to expect from the ride if I go ahead.....

What year?...  Pre-80' models were points ignition...

You'll get 10 or 15 extra ponies, and maybe 10mph more top speed...

Parts will be harder to find, and more expensive...

Beautiful bike and engine... Japanese Bonnie...

I want that front fender!... Grin...

Yamaha has dropped all parts support for the bike as it is way past their 15 year limit.

But it was a famous flat-track platform and when tweeked to the max it murderized all the Hurleys all over dirt tracks all over America.

It has also been a chopper/bobber and a cafe racer platform par excellence.

In stock tune, it was noted for mild broad power.

Thanks for the quick relpies, yo! I believe it's a '77.  Kick only, and in relatively good shape.  A rider, but a well cared for one.  Single owner.

So the parallel twin puts out more ponies, huh? Interesting. With some work this might be fun.....  But I'll hafta Kong the frame within an inch of it's life!

I guessed that there wasn't much in the way of OEM parts support from Yamaha anymore, but there's a bunch 3rd parties making parts for this thing, 'cuz its so popular as base for choppin'.  Kinda like the old CB's.

There's a very healthy online community and there are aftermarket parts available -- more than for the savage.

Bill is right about handling. Used to ride with a blue one on weekends. And yes, a v-twin or parrallel twin will always have more power with the same cc.  Wink

Dude get the XS. It's a classic, and since it's so popular for bobbing, it'll have a waaaay better re sale value should you ever need to sell. All around it's just a better bike

Hummmm'm, I ain't no youngster no more, don't lay'm down like I used to, Wink but compared to other bikes I had long ago, I think this one handles quite well,.....even w/o a FB. The opinions of some of the oldtimers here about (not only) the handling of this bike, I've often wondered why they would ever have one.....let alone keep one.

dollar for dollar, you still can hardly beat it even with its quirks. If not the savage you're looking at potentially too much power/maint/money. You get a 250 size and price, with 450 power in a 650 package that almost anyone can take care of.

Let me make this point,, YES, the Savage gets unruly at speeds that would get a guy hurt to go down,, Its a bit of a handful, yes,  the beauty of that is, it doesnt Lure me into a situation as easily as some very good handling machine might.. Its been said its more un to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Honestly, I am not a good enough rider to use a real good bike,, I NEED a bike that keeps me from running 80 & 100 mph thru a sweeper,, if it felt good up there, I probably try it..

Also popular for cafe racers, street trackers and good old restoration.
