Can a loose clutch strip your gears easily?
08/23/11 at 16:10:58
Hi, as a first time bike owner I've noticed when I go from 2nd gear through neutral to 1st gear (gear slipping) sometimes you can hear the gear not catching until I push real hard. I think I finally figured out that the owner before me didn't have the clutch tight enough, which I have adjusted myself.
So I was just wondering, could I have been damaging/stripping the gears with a loose clutch and that "slipping" sound shifting into 1st gear? Should I be worried about this?

you don't actually strip the gears as they are constant mesh
what is happening is the drive dogs are getting worn.
you might need to keep the clutch adjusted a little tighter to make sure it fully disengages during shifting and learn how to shift w/o the clutch.

I have the clutch slightly overtightened... just to keep that funky sound out of play..

Too loose is too loose, too tight is too tight, adjust it so there is some play n the lever, you want the cable to have a bit of lack in it,
