Belt rubbing bolt on Ryca build
08/15/11 at 12:53:08
Right after the belt exits from the underside of the front pulley (sprocket?) it rubs against a bolt head. This probabaly isn't a problem on the stock S40 as the belt sits higher. But with the Ryca shocks the belt is going to be rubbing itself to pieces on this bolt.
Any Ryca builders with the same problem? If so, what is the solution?

Ask Ryan and/or Casey about this. (telephone or email) They are pretty good about responding.

Even when I take the bolt out, the belt is almost rubbing on the boss on the case. It looks like I will have to not only use a roundhead allen bolt (probably flattened some), but I'll additionally have to grind the boss down flat with the case, maybe .080 or .090".

You can countersink a flat head allen screw to be flush mounted to the aluminum housing if you need to. The countersink is a simple 45 degree countersink you can get from Harbor Freight and the screws you can get from the on-line boltdepot.com place listed on this thread.

All the fender bolts on the inside of this fender were flush mounted to the steel fender, so aluminum should be fairly easy to do.

I will be trying this countersink procedure shortly. Thanks much.

Is your rear wheel properly aligned? I'd be surprised if yours is out of whack enough to move the belt that far over, but it's worth checking.

The countersink surgery went well on both bikes. We each now have about 1/16" clearance.
The aluminum in the case around that screw is
really
soft.
Thanks much for the idea.

I posted this same problem months ago. Switching to a round head bolt solved the issue. Also, you may consider checking clearance with you sitting on bike. With me OFF the bike, the bike is very close still, but once I sit down on it (150 pounds), there is plenty of clearance.

1/13" isn't much. The belt wanders side to side. I hope it is 1/16" with the belt mostly to the inside already.

Think of the flat head of the recessed screw as a wear plate like what a belt sander has on it -- now your cases are "protected".

I agree with what you say. I am still concerned, though, that when riding the thing around in a "spirited" manner, the swingarm will extend all the way down occasionally. I want to make sure the belt clears that bolt, even though most of the time (with my 210lbs on it), it will be higher than the bolt.

The fastener is now flush with the boss at that hole, so, unless I grind down some of the case at that point, there is no way to get anymore clearance.
