Running Lean

I've seen posts in the past that say the engine running lean causes the exhaust pipes to have a blue tint (noticable in most pics).  Does it cause any damage to the engine other than appearance wise?

tks.........mojo

I'm not an expert, hopefully someone older or smarter can correct me.

The gold/blue tint is caused by the exhaust getting really hot. Not necessarily too hot. Running lean means your engine is going to run hotter.

Unless you're really, really lean you're probably not going to hurt anything.

The '88 I got was hot enough to burn the piston, but not hot enough to blue the pipes.

We need mr aircraft mechanic to tell you what a hot exhaust will do over time.

A constant, excessive lean condition will cause damage...

That said,... most pipes blue from overheating while idling too long,... or while diagnosing a running problem,... or during an excessive hot spell, humid spell, mountain ride, etc... and the blue won't go away until it is removed...

A blue pipe, means you are a rider.,.. traffic, weather, distance, be darned...

Judge your jetting by how your bike runs,... not by the color of the pipe...
See my tuning guide in the Tech section for tips... Wink...

My pipe starts out a golden colour then turns blue then back to golden. All this before the heat shield. I just do normal riding, no long stops or idling. I've had my mixture screw anywhere from 1 1/2-2 1/2 turns out. No rejetting or other carb mods. Leaky HD muffler. Generally seems to run OK. I've always heard that a blued pipe is almost like a bikers badge of honor. That's the way I look at it.
