Traumatized
07/29/11 at 15:41:05

Still gaining confidence after decades away from riding, I finally  took a relatively long ride south out of Prescott, AZ on Rt 89. It's a beautiful road, and I live all of a quarter of a mile from it. As usual, there were many bikes northbound, and I very much felt a member of the fraternity of bikers as I shared the "low wave" with all of them. Sport bikes, nakeds, tourers, Harleys - all waived back save one. The guy on the BMW. The feeling of rejection is just overwhelming... :'(

I rode a BMW for a week. He probably had his hands epoxied to the controls.

Wait until you start dealing with Grandma and Grandpa on their "color matched to their riding gear" Goldwing with trailer. They won't even see you, let alone deign to acknowledge your presence.  Grin

I'll wave back. I'm the guy with the mid-30s Schwinn Henderson bicycle. I think I'm going to put my Savage out of my misery once and for all... now where'd the wife hide the deer slugs?

After getting back into riding in March 2009, I'd say at least 80% wave back. And around here, the lady, no matter what age, usually does the honors for the really big touring bikes.  Wink

Funny thread. I too am coming back after many years off from riding regularly. I have been paying attention to this lately. Since the paint job I have had an increase in the wave rate. In fact, I have had several people in cars flag me down or stop me to ask about it.

Well, most seem to wave at me, except for the guys on the super expensive custom choppers. They are too cool for school. Rolls eyes.

Concentrate on riding and relaxing. If youre really concerned that much about the social aspect of it you can nod your helmet without releasing the controls. They'll see ya. After you get comfortable with riding there's plenty of time to catch up on your social life if youre still here. First things first!

I wave as often as I can and, have most return the wave.
I also give a head nod when times prohibit me from waving.

Each time I see another biker, I smile and realize thier like me.
Their on 2 wheels, enjoying the freedom as well as the wind in
their face.
So some may ride more expensive bikes, ok most do...lol.. Yet
again, were all able to agree on the wonderful feeling it gives ya
when you can get out and ride..

Being traumatized is when Genie is not able to go out for a few weeks
in the winter..  Sad kim

I wave nearly all the time.

One of the places I don't wave is at a bike rally -- just too many bikes to wave at!  (Hey, I do have to operate the clutch once in a while!)

I also may not wave when I'm riding a technically difficult area, dirt or gravel roads and in crazy traffic.

If someone doesn't wave back, I just figure that he or she is riding at the limit of their ability and needs both hands on the bars.
