Powder coating prep
07/20/11 at 11:12:01

Hi, all -

as you have probably seen from the video of the Savage I'm helping with, the paint is a peach color (faded from the factory orange).  We are debating powder-coating or painting a flat black.  I don't worry about the equipment - seems like we may be able to get a better finish with powdercoating, since we've never painted before.  However, I assume I'd have to sand down to metal so I can charge it for the powder to stick.

So, do you think this would cause problems as far as durability goes?  Or is powdercoat strong enough that it's not a big deal to remove the factory paint/primer (I've heard factory paint/primer is your best protection)?

Thanks!

When powdercoating, any paint/primer must come off. But any rock hard hot roll scale doesn't.

No, I'm not an expert, but I've done a little home powder coating.
