New Handlebars 1997 ls650
07/19/11 at 20:57:58

Hello all, I'm looking to replace my existing (pull back, not drag style) handlebars for my savage and just need some quick guidance. I know that the bars are 1" in general but are they 1" throughout? Are there any other tips about the stock bars I need to know before buying another set of bars or can I just get a 1" bar. Essentially I just want something that is going to stretch me out a bit, lower my hands and widen them some. Nothing as drastic as a drag bar but something with a bit of a rise and much less back bend.

thanks in advance!

We call 'em buckhorns

You'll need something with about 4 to 6" rise or you'll hit the tank.
I stand 6' and 30" bars are good for me.  Ended up with a set of Z bars.
they have about the same pull back as drag bars.

Go to a independent and pick up some bars an try them on for size.
as opposed to going to a bar and pick up an independent.   Grin

next, sit on your bike close your eyes and put out your hands where you'd like them.  have someone measure, width and rise from the bar clamps.

He means 30" wide drag bars. Broomstick is nice too.

30" wide end to end
those are 2.5" rise, not quite enough, but similar to my 1st bars.

You can fine tune the height after you get them with some home made or commercial risers.  Our risers are attached to the tripple tree by thru bolts.  You can raise the bar clamps up with some spacers and new thru bolts.  There are a lot of things we can use for risers, 3/8 drive 3/4 sockets work and come in standard length and deep socket length.  Just get 2 matching.

BTW, the thru bolt is metric, just a shade larger than 3/8 and doesn't go thru 3/8 drive sockets.  But 3/8 bolts work fine instead.

30" across the gap, or along the bend of the bar?
