Adjust valves with loose cam chain?
07/11/11 at 19:31:12

Hi, all -

so as you know, my cam chain tensioner separated, and I'm waited for the Verslavy mod.  My plan is to install it without replacing the cam chain, just hope to get as many miles as possible.

I assume the bike has never had its valves adjusted in 10k miles, so this is also on my to-do list.  My question is, can I do this before I put the new tensioner in, or do I need cam chain tension on it to adjust valves?  Furthermore, once I install the new tensioner, should I drive the bike for a bit to make sure the slack is taken out, and then (after letting the engine cool for a day, of course) do the valves?  Or can I put the new tensioner in, and then turn the motor over manually a few times and then do the valves?

Finally, does anybody have any feeler gauge recommendations for this?  I saw these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009OR94M/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486...

but they are too fat.  Are there longer angled feeler gauges like this anyone can recommend for the Savage?

Thanks!
Andy

rotating the engine w/o a tensioner may cause the chain to jump a tooth.
you don't really need tension, but it needs to be at TDC, and the cam too.
once the tensioner is in, manually rotate the engine a few times then adjust the valves

As far as the feeler gauges go, I've had good luck using these:

I like 'em.  They are made by Motion Pro.
