Possible Starter Issue

Hi guys,
    I'm rolling a 2006 S40. I just picked it up about a month and a half ago, but I'm having an issue. When I hit the starter it clicks, but the motor doesn't turn. Also, it happens at the random. Sometimes it starts up fine, but sometimes just the click with no apparent rhyme or reason. I'm assuming the starter is toast, but it may be a relay or solenoid or something. Just wondering if this is a common problem with these bikes so maybe somebody has an idea of where to start.

your decompression solenoid probably needs to be adjusted.

Do you have a clymers manual?

You mentioned the valves had been adjusted.  Part of that procedure should be adjusting the decompression solenoid cable.  From what you describe, yours isn't properly adjusted.

Next, your battery -- it must maintain over 10 volts while cranking the bike or the electronics won't fire the plug.   This sounds silly as the bike might roll over slowly but it won't start at all as it is getting no spark.

Detecting this one is easy -- give a sad battery a nice fresh full charge and it will crank, but tomorrow it has trickled down and it won't go.

I didn't mention anything about the valves being adjusted, they have not. As far as the battery goes, that would be a big negative. The battery is charged and holding. In the event that the bike does turn over, which it does at random, it starts up very easily and with no hesitation.  It has started up randomly a half dozen times over the last week and I haven't charged the battery at all during that time period.

Intermittent electrical issues are a big PIA.  Before attacking the starter I would suggest checking the grounding points to make sure they are clean and tight, as well as the kickstand saftey cutout, it can act up ((But i don't remember if you can get a click or simply silence with the sidestand)) .  Best of luck.

This is another clear indication to me that the issue is one of adjustment, not electrical.

You are stalling the starter against the full compression of the engine.
Adjust the cable tighter by one turn untill it stops doing it or follow the instructions given in clymer or elsewhere.

Otherwise, use process of eliminization. Hot wire around all that stuff,....even if it means jumper cables from your car directly to the starter. (frame for negative) Just don't let too much fire fly !

Thanks for all the input guys, as soon as I get the chance I'm gonna go at the decomp solenoid, it seems to be the heavy favorite amongst the group. Nothing would make me happier than to make the fix with an adjustment vs. having to buy parts or worse replace the starter motor.

You can prove it by just manually engaging the decomp & hitting the starter,, if it spins over nicely every time YOU pull the thing in, thats pretty much proof, innit?
Are yu sure its even engaging? Is it plugged in?
