Have fuel, have spark ... no start!
06/22/11 at 13:00:36

I emptied the fuel cup three times and removed spark plug and found it like new, dry, with strong spark ... but the bike won't start. Battery is freshly charged and crank well.  What else can I check? I did get a couple vrooms for half a second! Thanks.

About how long are you cranking for?  Without checking compression, If you crank for a few seconds I would think the spark plug would get wet; if it's remaining dry I would think that no fuel is getting into the cylinder.  If no fuel is getting to the cylinder, however you have drained the carb bowl, then I would think you have some clogged pilot jet passageways.
Is the bike new?  Or did you just pick it up?  When did it last run/run right?  Is it all stock or do you know there have been some modifications?  Is the Air filter clogged or is it dirty/filled with oil/fuel?
A little bit more info might help a little!  Smiley

How much gas came out when ya drained the bowl? Enough to think its actually filled? Was it clean? You used prime to refill it? How much cranking has been done since the battery was charged?

Get that thing in Neutral, so youre not getting any clutch drag in it at all.

Prime on the petcock, for sure.
Crank with no throttle
Start? Laugh & Giggle

No start?

1/2 choke, no throttle

Start? See above..

No start?
Full Choke, no throttle

Start? See above
No start?

Id have to get some Berrymans or something wih a propellant that will make it fire. I dont like Starting Fluid for gas engines,
WD40 doesnt work any more, or so Ive heard. Pull air filter out anyway,,

even before you go with the spray, pull the filter out, make sure the thing is breathing easy.

What happene, anyway? How lon you been riding it? Whats the history,,

Bike is 2007, and I just picked it up.  Seller said it was tuned up last year, but it didn't want to start this year.  I got about a cup of gas for the three drains.  I cranked about ten times for about 5-10 seconds each.  The battery still crank after that, but I recharged anyway, then repeated the process.  Smelled gas after cranking excercises.  Have not checked air filter, but will do today.

I will also follow the starting procedure as suggested and report back.  Thanks.

I wonder if the clutch issue is part of this issue...When the engine is cranking, is it a strong crank or does it sound like it is cranking under a little bit of a load, as in the bike is trying to drive while you are cranking...I'd suggest putting it in neutral so at least the transmission isn't trying to push while it's cranking...just my $.02...

He didn't want to start it this year,.. ...because it won't start...  Grin...

Hint... the carb's got gas, but the engine don't...

Pull the carb, and clean the jets and passages, make sure the slide is free...  Wink...

Uh oh... this may be more than I can handle!  BTW, JOG, I followed your instruction and got a vroom for about 1 second, and then back to just cranking and cranking!  I love scenic routes, but you guys have to ride slow so I can keep up!

At what point did you get the Vroom? Full choke?

Now that you asked, I noted that the vroom only happens on the first crank of the day.  Today, again, it was the first crank with prime, no throttle, no choke as suggested.  I tried the other configs and no vroom.

I suspect, like the others, that it's the carb.
full clean Hawaiian style is your best bet.
or you can throw a hail mary and fill it with seafoam and let sit overnite.
but it's not a sure thing, did work for me but not as good as a full clean.
it was wonky for a couple of days, now it's fine.  bike sat for a year.

fill a oil can with gas and squirt some into the vac port and see what happens after the 1st vroom.
