Good for you skeebo.

Take out that lit short fuse and put in a longer one.

All you newb's take note... most PO's are afraid of this little bit of maintenance.  And will hand it to you with a short lit fuse and won't tell you.  fn base terds.

Now if you got a buddy with a borescope, get em to look in the oil fill hole.  put a right angle mirror on it so you can see the little gremlin w/o taking the cover off.

My buddy Jud bought his 2000 LS650 with 14,000 on it, so when we were waiting the decade or so it took for the RYCA parts to arrive, we just flopped his bike on its side (the battery had been removed), pulled the cover off, and had a look.  Oh my,...

This is how it looks now:

Mine has 4000 miles, and is not ticking, so I'm going to leave it alone for a while.

While our worksmanship is kind of sloppy compared to the verslavy mod, it'll probably work okay for another several thousand miles or so.  If it starts ticking again, we'll have another look.

To get the cover off, and replace the part is not that hard.  I'll bet an average weekend mechanic could do the whole thing on a Saturday morning, once he/she had all the parts,.. gaskets, verslavy, oil filter.

My recommendation for most folks here is to use the verslavy mod.  It is done the RIGHT way, and costs a LOT less than having a dealer replace the cam chain.  We took a shot at doing it ourselves because we have some basic welding and machining capability.  We still don't know if it works or not.

I had a fixer-upper 03' that was out to 21mm at 4k miles...  My bike 97' was at 17mm at 25k when I Verslavied it...

I think it may have to do with low idle speeds, or short commutes...
... or both...

... or neither...
Huh...

I love how verslavy can be conjugated to verslavied!  I'll be looking for it in the dictionary!

Just did mine about a couple months ago... my '87 with 8k mi was at 17mm.  No particular noises, just had it down for the plug cap leak, so took the opportunity to check the cam chain tensioner and replaced it with the VerSlavy.

Anybody ever think about older bikes maybe having had the odometer changed out?  Here, after a vehicle is so old, actual mileage is not required on the title.  Therefore, when we swapped tanks on my son's '87, we ended up with one that has alot less miles.  Just something to consider.... if you weren't your bike's original owner.

Babyhog - that is always a good possibility.  In my case, I am positive the mileage is correct.  Smiley

Would anyone be able to tell me the specs for this mod? How long do you make the extension part? I have been googling on how to make this but can not seem to find anything!
Thanks!

Question. What about heat treating, is the extension soft in the first place?

It seems you may compromise the case hardening is any.
