Never had one that worked correctly for very long. They always develop leaks. And the line routing isn't great, so the line (or lines on Yamaha XS series) dry out and crack pretty quick. Easy fix for that is a dirt bike cap vent line, much better base material (and you can get it in different colors).

I've had standard ones fail too, especially metric threaded HD versions. But considering the never rebuilt 1963 mechanical on my Honda still works great, I'll stick with mechanical ones.

Remembering to turn the gas off (or on) isn't that hard.

I capped the ports off and ran it on prime, but the bike wouldn't keep running, it just stalled it out.  Is this still symptoms of a bad vac line?

I haven't done anything with the cam chain.  I will though now that I know about that.

Nope. Try spraying WD40 around the intake and airbox boots. If the bike smooths out, there is your problem. They are a rubber blend and can dry out and crack. If that doesn't help, onwards and upwards.
