Start of a bad day. Wont Start

Hey guys,

Seemed like a nice day out so got on the bike, wont start...

Was running fine a few days ago, starter kicks in, I dont think the engine does. Every so often I get a puff of smoke out of the air filter but engine wont start. I probably drained the battery by now. Didnt have time to mess with it this morning so I took the car. Anyway, where do I start?

I am sure that others, far more knowledgable than I am, will chime in.  First thing is to charge the battery, that is an important part every time you hit the switch.

Yea, it was raining pretty hard a few days back, the bike is outside but covered. Who knows if some humidity got in there somehow. The only thing I did different is I have a raptor petcock and I left it ON and usually turned it OFF. Maybe it's flooded. Smoke would mean I have some kind of spark though.

Maybe the rain had somnething to do with it, moisture will do funny things.  I have the raptor and never turn it off and have never had a problem.

If these things arent starting, step one is to make sure the battery is HOT,,

Yea, first thing I noticed was I left in ON but there was no gas smell and no puddle. I think I can rule out the petcock. Unfortunately I had to get to work and couldnt troubleshoot. now it's gonna bother me all day.

When I get home tonight I'll try to pop start it in 2nd, I live on a slight hill so that's easy to do.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but there is no harm in leaving a raptor petcock turned to "ON" unless you have a bad float.

Oh good Smiley

Yea, leaving petcock ON shouldnt be a problem, I dont think that's it. I turned it off now, hoping that if anything got flooded it will dry by the time I get home tonight.

Like precher and justin said, HOT battery. Electronics don't work well with reduced voltage. When I have a no start on almost anything that requires gas and the engine is turning over I put a SMALL squirt of starting fluid in the airbox/filter and give it a try. If it cranks and dies it is usually a gas problem or a bad plug. If it doesn't do anything I then move to check for spark at the plug. Starting fluid is dangerous and should be used with caution to protect you and your engine. About the float--the float does just that. When the carb bowl is full the float rises and pushes on a needle valve to cut off or reduce flow of gas. When the engine is off the level in the bowl is steady and full. If it sticks or even has a hole so it sinks, gas will run whereever it can because of a wide open condition of the needle. It can, but does not always, run into the engine case and reduce the lubrication of your oil. Check your oil and give a little sniff test at the fill hole if you think it has gas in it. This is not a complete list of things to do, but they are first on my list. Others do it differently and can tell you their ideas. But first, as others say, charge the battery with a good charger, not a trickle charger. They take too long. Take 12 volts and call me in the morning. Wink

Yea, I got a charger. I'll see if it pop starts, that will rule out the battery and starter. Wonder why I got smoke coming out of airfilter though.

Well, got home, tried to start the bike normally and guess what? Started right up, runs fine and started up again. Who knows??? Humidity? Flooded? Electrical short?....
