Headlight Problem
06/13/11 at 16:32:32

Hey all,
I am fairly new to owning a motorcycle. I picked up a 96 savage yesterday and the previous owner let me know that the headlight would occasionally go out and blow a fuse. Got the bike for a good price so didnt let this deter me. now the headlight isnt coming on. I changed both fuses and still nothing. pulled the headlight and tested it and it lights up. Was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on where to start looking for the issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i have searched google and the forum for a solid hour and found nothing Undecided

You can check for a loose connector, but most likely you'll find the problem where the wires go thru the headlight.

First things first, check the bulbs...  Smiley
Second, see if the headlight is dead on both high and low.  If headlight doesn't come on at all, you know the return path is shot (Black/White wire).
Find the big plug (8 pin connector) and disconnect it.  Check from the +12 VDC (Orange wire) and Battery Ground (Black/White wire).  You should have 12 VDC (roughly) there.  If you don't, then that means you have a broken wire somewhere between the fuse and that plug.
If you do have 12 VDC there, check the connections on the dimmer switch, looking for the black/orange wire.  There will probably be 2 on there, you can do a resistance check between the Black/Orange wire in the horn connecter, to the dimmer switch and the plug.  That is the other side of the Orange wire in the big plug.
Hah....I think you won't have to go this far, but just incase you do and need to go further, here is a page with the wiring diagrams:

Good luck!

If it was a short,, youd be blowin fuses,, Id go around & play with every connector, If you get rid of all symptoms except intermittent horn, then look into that button,
