Loud screeching fro right side cover
06/13/11 at 05:19:14

I got on my bike to ride home from work this morning and started the bike. It took a couple more cranks than usual to get it to fire up but once it did there was a loud screeching from the right side cover. Sounded like it was coming from behind the oil filter. I had been noticing the past week or so that it had been a little harder to start and ive never had to use my choke but since it started I have had to. If i rev it, it gets louder it does it even sitting still. I had to ride it home cause i had no other way to get home which is just a couple miles down the road. Every since ive had to use my choke it seems to backfire a lot more. It use to just make like a blooping sound
(STOCK SPORTSTER PIPE ON IT). I thought since it was backfiring more i just needed to adjust my valves and carb, butt since this morning it looks like im going to have to do a little more than that Sad

Any help where to start would be a huge help. im going to start with draining the oil to see if anythings in the oil then on to taking the side cover off. If its done welp guess its time to start ordering parts starting with the big bore kit!  Wink

In my opinion, a loud screeching noise is usually metal to metal with no oil in between. However the clutch "throw out" or "release plate" in autos makes the same noise when going bad. That would probably be cheaper to fix. Hope it's not too bad.

First step, drain oil into a clean pan, run a clean magnet thru it.
Hope you dont get much,
Pull clutch cover & see whats goin on n there.

Also, you can get a white rag, like a tee nuts & pour the oil thru that & see how much aluminum grit or any other non ferrous metal in bits large enough to stay in the rag. etc, etc,
