Is a little play in rear wheel pulley drum okay?

When I say play I mean very little. I can push the drum and it wiggles just a tad against the wheel. Should it be totally tight/ no play?
I made a poor man's bike stand (link to instructions were posted somewhere here) and used it today to drop the wheel and get that #$!@* brake side passenger peg off. Plus I wanted to drop the wheel just to learn how to do it.
BTW that rear axle nut is a cheap, vulgar wh*re to remove

Thats a Biggo Rubber shock absorber, built into the rear hub. If it gets too sloppy, you can use pieces of an innertube to shim it up. I did & Im tickled with the way it worked.

Axle nut is on the drive side on mine, plenty of room for real tools instead of the piece of tin that came with the bike. Now you've got me wondering if I installed the axle backwards... been that way for years though...
You need a tiny amount of movement in the pulley mount. Design was swiped from the late great KZ440.

The brake is totally snug on the right side, it's just the driven pulley drum that has a tiny bit of play when I push it.
The axle nut doesn't want to go any tighter. Should I stand it back up, loosen the nut again and give the axle a few more taps with a rubber mallet and try again?

I put the nut on the muff side
Cause I can press on the seat to get it off
Then slip the shaft out from the other side
Yep, that's how I swing.

The pulley should have some play as noted before. but check the bearings out sometime, they can wear out. too much play and you'll wear out the dampers.

You could check to make sure the six nuts that mount the pulley to the hub are tight.
As far as function goes, the axle can go in either way as long as the spacers are in the correct positions. Some years have a standard bolt head on one end of the axle while others have a cylindrical section with a transverse hole. I prefer the first type.

You don't always notice it, but most used bikes have a little slop in the hub bumpers. Not terminal and can be shimmed as needed. Be sure of your bearings while you have it down.

I tried the axle nut on both sides to see if I could get rid of the play but it made no difference. Still a little play but that is normal. A little trick I use to put on the rear wheel back on is I use a big telephone directory book and lay it down flat and open it up till the tire will just roll up and line up with the swing arm holes and just slide the axle thru.

Stinger, I just measured my phone book at the spine. It is exactly 1/4".
