Motor Cleaning
06/01/11 at 16:27:11

My '06 S40 of course has a black motor with silver fin edges. Well the black isn't all that black anymore. It has a whitish hue to it. But it seems to be just on the surface, kinda like black plastic fades in the sun over time. I tried cleaning it off, but it won't get back to black. Is there anything that will get it back to black without having to paint the whole dang thing? I once tried tire shine, and it actually did a good job for a while, but it attracts dust a lot. And wiping off the dust eventually gets it back where it was before. Anybody have a good idea?

Years ago I used Armor All Now I use a detailer,The Armor All makes it blacker and didn't hurt anything.Armor All seemed fun to be using on metal but it worked good.

Is that the brand name? Where to buy?

Yea, Nu-finish is a brand.  I found they have car wash, scratch doctor, polish, and vinyl cleaner.  Don't see anything for metal.   http://www.nufinish.com/products.html
Can find this stuff at KMart, Napa, Auto Zone, WalMart, tons of places...

I was thinking something like Mother's Back-To-Black, but I looked it up and it says for rubber, plastic, and vinyl too.  No idea what it would do on metal, but I'd try it.

Actually the surface isn't metal. Since it's paint coated, the metal is just underneath. The coating is a synthetic material like car paint or plastic.

Any car polish you have to take it off,Armor All all you do is just spray on and do nothing.

Well, thanks ralfy.  I had to go and try a few things in my arsenal.  And actually, the Armor All looks pretty dang good!  But I also have some Turtle Wax Color Magic Black and it seems to clean better and look blacker too.  If you've cleaned first, this stuff might re-black it.  Mine didn't look all that bad to begin with.  Just a suggestion...

Now I guess I better go clean the rest of mine!  lol
