Wobbly bolt

Just took off the left chrome cover on the cylinder head and found that the front bolt is loose and not secured to anything. It just flops over. How do you retighten the acorn (cap) nut to a bolt that isn’t solid and you can’t reach?

Take a 12mm open end wrench and reach into the fins and put it on the head of the bolt that is showing down there between the #2#3fins thereabouts.

Its there, just lower down (or mebbe higher?) than you may have been looking.

Two things you can do:

1) pull the head, slide the bolt out and forget it
2) cut a spacer, top with some washers and tighten it down (which is what I did)

you CAN get to the bottom of the bolt, though it is a bit tricky. it is recessed under some fins, like Oldfeller said.

also, if you remove the bolt you may get an oil leak. I left the bolt rattle around for a month or so and saw a little leakage. some people might disagree, but i'm fairly sure that was the cause.

Thanks BurnPGH. We should indeed ride, let me know when your bike is ready for the road, if this wet weather ever breaks  :'(
