Hello everybody, how bout some advice?

Well, I'm a 22 year old looking for my first motorcycle. I think I'd like a used savage but not sure if it is a good first bike. I just want to ride around town, maybe hop on the highway quick, generally short trips. The low price and simplicity of a savage and the light weight make it very appealing but I've read that 600'ccs is too much for a beginner. But, Im 6'3 and a 250 just seems too small for me. What do you think? any and all suggestions are welcome and thanks for any input!

Reply #1 - 05/15/11 at 22:55:37 Maybe a 650 sport bike is too much, but the savage was the bike I learned on and it was a good experience. You should defintaley look into taking a motorcycle safety class

I'm 3" shorter than you though, you will need a new set of bars if you get the buckhorns or turn the risers around if you get the drag bar.

its a great first bike
the power is there, the size is perfect, and its versatile
not to mention that having this forum around really helps with mechanical explorations
i too was hesitant in buying a savage as my first bike
but a week into owning one i was convinced i made the right decision
looking back i wouldnt have done it any other way

Thanks guys I'm already signed up for the course. I don't need to go a million miles an hour so cruisers are all i'm interested in getting. I've done some simple mechanical work before (replaced a radiator, alternator, brakes, etc) so I assume I could mod the controls a little forward to fit my frame, is there anything I would need to watch out for?

I bought this bike not knowing about all the great support offered on this board, but boy am I glad I found it!!! Very valuable resource and it has made my first bike purchase very pleasant. These guys can help you do just about anything you want to try to do to the bike.

If you haven't already checked out the "Marketplace" section of the board, you will want to when looking for items. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=market The top 2 items are forward controls like you already mentioned, and if you find a bike with buckhorn bars and would like to swap for drag bars there is probably someone willing to trade you...endless options. I had never been the navigator on a bike until last June. I fell in love with the freedom. I found my 99 Savage and fell in love with it. I am 5-4 and found it easy for me to have a flat footed stop. There is enough power that i wont grow out of it too fast. I have been down a couple times with her and i am the one that took the brunt of everything. I highly recommend the Savage.

First of all, welcome aboard.
You have already shown your smart as in
signing up for the MSF class. Also you have
picked the best bike you could to learn on
and enjoy.
I had a 50cc scooter, 250 Rebel, and now this.
I enjoyed each bike for different reasons. The
S-40 allows me to go hwy speeds when I need
to and not feel like I can't keep up. She is great
for trips around town and she loves it when I take
her thru the twisties.

Mechanically she is great to work on. Easy to change
the oil and fix other maintance problems as they arise.
Their are some very knowledgeable people here. Any
questions you come up with, they will have the answer.
Sooo if you haven't already snached up that bike, they
by golly what are you waiting for? Keep us posted. Post
a pic of yourself and whatever bike you do end up with.
Again welcome aboard..

I wanted to add, some go out and
buy a big bike their first time.
They feel to start out on a smaller
bike is below them.
That is their ego talking, not their
brain.
If someone you know has a smaller bike
or you can find someone that is willing to
let you ride 2 up so you get the jest of
the S-40.
S-40 has some torque and it will zip right
out of the starting gate. Again these are
great bikes and easy to work on.
Whatever bike you choose, go slow,
practice and learn to become one with
the bike..

im 6'2" with a 32" inseam and started on a rebel 250. Shouldve started on the savage. Its 250 sized with much more get up and go and much more highway capable, though admitedly, the highway is not the savages prefered terrain. On the rebel my legs would cramp up but not so with the savage. Still, you'd be wise to look into a couple of modifications right off the bat. Forward controls (4" from EdL. or 6" from Routy) and the "seat lift" mod will go towards making you much more comofrtable.
