Valves out of adjustment?
05/14/11 at 09:07:49

I just bought a 2006 S40 about a month ago. It only had around 1500 miles on it when I bought it and the guy said that it sat for about two years in his barn and rarely rode it. I changed the oil right after buying it and have put about 400 miles on it since. It has been popping a lot when I am slowing down or after heavy acceleration, it sounds about like a gun shot. I also noticed the other day that it had a faint rattling sound during mid-range RPM's, its hard describe but sounds like a very faint-rapid tapping sound and it goes away at low or high RPM. Aside from these two things, it has no other problems. Any thoughts? I was reading that the valves are supposed to be adjusted every 6k miles, could this be the culprit? Is it going to damage my motor if I do not get it adjusted ASAP?

Thanks!

Save the $100 worth of hard earned money  --  your valves are easy to adjust and that is the easiest way to find out if they need adjustment.   Do it yourself and save the money.

Decel pop is quite common and normal.  but check your header bolts and muffler clamp.
