Do new handlebars need to be drilled for controls?
05/02/11 at 18:02:00

I want to get some Biltwell Keystones for my bike, but have heard that there are pre-drilled holes for the controls to rest in. Obviously I haven't yet taken off the hand controls to check. That will be tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Yes there is, file them off, don't bother drilling the holes, save you alot of grief.

That's the consensus.. filing nubs is better than drilling bars.  Especially if they're aluminum.

I just stuck on a set of HD sportster bars and will be filing off the nub on the indicator assembly tonight. I installed and rode with it as it was but the indicators are turned too high up and I honk my horn more than I indicate now. I don't consider that safe ... or funny.

I wouldn't try drilling unless you're super skilled and have a drill press. For me, it's the grinder attachment and my dremmel!

Drilling pipe means having  good center punch & a sharp little bit to get things started, Drill press helps, but not essential, A piece of angle iron & some vise grips is pretty handy, or a friend.. Grinding a nub seems so much easier..

I grind a small flat on the pipe and then punch it, then start with a small drill and work my way up to the size that I need.

That's what I did on the FireLizard when I put on the 10in mini apes. I just used my dremel with a sanding drum and sanded down the nub. Took less than a minute.
