You just turn the key on, dont even hit the start button & the coil starts firing the plug?

Correct.

I think I have a voltmeter somewhere. How exactly do I perform this test?

ignition coil

primary 1-7 ohms between o/w & b/y
secondary 10-15 K ohms between plug wire and b/y

late last year i posted the ohm readings to check the ignitor unit...
found it;
rubber side down 8/02/10
did a search "ignitor unit"

Gotta be the ignitor. I can't see how a defective coil would do that. They either work, or they are weak if there's a short in the coil, or they don't work if there's an open circuit. Somehow that coil is getting high frequency signals and that can only be the ignitor. I thought about the pickup coil as well, but I can't see how it could malfunction in that manner.
Clymers says that the stealer has a special tester for the ignitor. The service manual says essentially the same thing, but gives the specs if you have the "Suzuki pocket tester", and warns that the values won't be correct unless you use the Suzuki tester.
Take it to the stealer to see if it's defective. Ask them what's wrong with it if they know. Then take it to an electronics repair shop. If they can get the chip, they can fix it a h*ll of a lot cheaper than the $500 that the stealer will want for a new one. Every thing in the ignitor is a shelf part except the chip, and that can be ordered.

I just had another look and that cap right beside the big transistor looks a little cooked on top.

Never used one of these before. Where do I plug the wires in, what setting, and which wires do I touch on the bike??

Black wire, bottom right corner, red wire, one hole up, turn dial to the Ohms section, lower left of the dial, surrounded by a thin green line. You decide what range by what youre gonna read. I you expect to see 10, ooo ohms, you need to set it on the 20 K, but it wont hurt a thing if you go to 2000k (2,000 K = 2,000,000 ohm = 2 meg ohms) . Just play with it. as long as here is No POwer to what you are measuring, ya cant really mess up too bad, just steer clear of messing with reading on items still installed in circuits. That can confuse the daylites out of ya.  Unless the item to be tested is out of the circuit on at least on end, you cant know youre not seeing continuity in a parallel section of the circuit, well,, unless you have a schematic of the circuit youre troubleshooting..

OHH, & measuring Ohms really doesnt require getting the polarity with th wires "right".. but, itll make someone who hasnt done this a lot more comfortable.. ..

It already confused the daylights out of me!

What do you mean no power to what Im measuring?

Measuring the resistance in a circuit that has voltage applied to it just dont work out.. Unhook the power to whatever you are wanting to check with an ohm meter.

so I remove the coil completely from the bike, and touch both wires to its wires? and that should give me an OHM reading?

You don't have to remove the coil, just disconnect the wires REMEMBERING WHERE THEY GO! Then connect one side to ground (the mounting bolt) then the other side to ground and write down each reading.

should be 1 to 7 ohms, try it on the 200 scale.

Ill do a new reading tomorrow.

If it is the CDI box, whats the best way of doing that?

Odds of fixing it are probably slim, so Ill need a new (used?) one...

I see them on eBay for $140ish, and I know that some arent compatable with each other, so which ones do I look for?

Pre '90's bikes have a different connector the post '90
And the timing's different.

So try to get one in your time period.

There were a few recently that started at $50
