For me, they keep my lower spine at the right angle to my legs and butt. I have a degenerative joint and disc condition. I can sit on my Honda with flat tracker style bars for a couple minutes, tops. Can't even sit on a bike with clip-ons anymore.

I rode one of my Panheads from Spokane Wa to Tijuana Mexico with apehangers. Didn't walk right for a week, but I think that had more to do with the fact it was a "double rigid", hardmounted seat on a stock 53 HD rigid frame. And the less than 48 hours start to finish.

My 99 Vulcan 800A had 12" rise bars, I put 40K miles on it in 18 months. I might have put 400 miles on my 05 Vulcan 800 Classic in 4 months, stock low bars. I hated the ride position on the Classic (and handling sucked with a 16" front wheel). Identical seating positions other than the bars.

So as some of you know my timing chain tensioner went out a couple weeks ago. I got to thinking about this today what if when i bought a tensioner if i just took a link out of my chain. The tensioner wouldn't have enough slack to come out then. Just let me know on your thoughts. my be another solution to the tensioner coming apart.

what i got done on it last night

1st problem... the pins are locked in by deforming the ends.  So taking them apart and putting them back together can't be done w/o spare pins.

2nd problem... the given max stretch of the chain is only .07" and the pitch of the chain is 0.25"

3rd problem... can't just take out one link or 0.25", has to be 2 or male and female links for a 0.50".  Not enough slack in the chain to do that.

The evidence is clear, the chain is either stretched or guides are worn.
You can measure the chain, and visually inspect the guides.
from experience, yes it is, and yes they are.
replacing the chain will get you halfway back by itself.
replacing the guides will get you a quarter back.
