HELP 1st fill-up and it died!
04/29/11 at 07:32:13

Embarrassing 1st question....my 1st fill-up w/ my new (used) Savage and I put in 2.5  gals of non-oxy gas. I left the station and within 2 blocks, it back-fired, sputtered, and died.

I may have over-filled the tank (over the bottom of the neck) so what did I flood to make it quit (and not re-start)?

I pushed it home  (1 mile..up-hill...both ways) and drained the bowl. Checked the petcock for flow. Dry air filter. I siphoned about 1/2 gal of gas out to lower the tank level....and still no hint of a start!

If you overfill, it'll make gas pour out of the cap,.. but no reason it won't start...

It wasn't diesel was it?..

Check your start regimen... key on(one click), shut-off switch on, kickstand up, clutch in,... start...

The bowl was full? If the bowl was full, then was it good gas or was it crappy looking stuff?
Pull the plug & look for spark, too.

You didnt bump the kill switch did yaa?

Same thing happened to my daughter. She filled up with the same gas she always does, went 2 blocks and the engine died. Long story short - the dealer had just received a new gas shipment and the guy in the truck filled up the wrong tank with diesel. We got her tank drained,  fill it with fresh gas, engine fired up, went back to the station where 20 other people were in line, got the price of the gas, + $100 for our trouble.

It ran 2 blocks...so I know it's not a 'switch' of some kind. If I can't 'over-fill', then it must be the gas! I hope THEY had the wrong gas vs I pumped the wrong gas. What a dope!  Embarrassed  I do love this bike! Smiley

Don't rule out a switch.
I had a rock hit my faceshield then bounce off of run/kill switch turning it off.  Of course I didn't see it hit the run/kill, but I did notice the bike slowing.  A few minutes later WTF is this doing off for?

I had a similar situation when I went over a small bump and the watch that was clipped to the mirror stem bounced and slammed down on the kill switch. Just like you, I didn't see it happen so it took me few minutes on side of the road to figure it out.

Thanks guys for all the quick (witted) responses. I called the station and deduced 'I' went to the non-oxy pump, but put in deisel fuel accidentally. Embarrassed

I was in a hurry, had just changed oil, and bled brakes on a different bike....and didn't do it RIGHT!

Now, I ass-ume I can simply drain the tank (and carb) and re-fill w/ GAS. Any other tips for righting my wrong? Thanks loads!!!!

Disconnect hose to carb from tank at carb. Put hose into gas can.Put the petcock on Prime & Drain diesel in. Drain carb bowl. Hook up hose to carb. Gas in the tank, put it on prime, fire that dude up...

Seems like I would smell that stuff before the tank got filled.

And am I right in that it will run on diesel if you keep it cobbed while it was still running ? Grin
