new front headlight question?
04/09/11 at 16:23:21

I have the dreaded ls650 headlight crack. Actually cracks- like 10 or so.

I have been looking around, trying to figure out a new headlight that's around the same size. My question is, can anyone recommend one for me? Something that's easy to mount and will conceal the turn signal and headlight wiring inside the bucket like the OEM one. I see a bunch out there on ebay and stuff but it doesn't look like any of them allow you to conceal those wires inside.

Funny, I asked a sales guy at a nearby dealer whether that "squirrels nest" behind the bucket was the way things are supposed to be and he said "yep". Didn't know that you could tuck all that in the shell.

And bottom mount HD can be made to work.

Can't seem find a used one. There is one on ebay for like $95 shipped- well a brand new one is around that price anyways.
Not sure about the "dreaded"- I guess I was making that up. But I have read multiple posts here about cracking of the cheap plastic.

Which wattage HID did you get?  The site states that 55W bulbs are not recommended for smaller housings.  Did anyone find problems using a 55W in our headlight cases?

An HID light is next on my upgrades list.

I got the 35w and the light is quite impressive.
Becareful with the aiming.  Although hard to find the dmv handbook will give instructions on how to aim and may vary from state to state.

Epoxy the cracks on the inside.

If the cracks are still visible on the outside and you don't need the bucket to be chrome, roughen it a bit with sandpaper, fill the cracks with body filler, sand, prime and paint.

You could replace it with a Marauder headlight off ebay.  They come up occasionally at reasonable prices.  They are larger than the LS650 headlight and the come with the same mounting holes and beam angle. I put one on mine and really like the larger size.

an update on my headlight. So i removed it to inspect it and noticed that the chrome was bubbling in the back. I used a razor blade and cut a little slit in one of the bubbles. I then proceeded to peel the chrome completely off the entire headlight housing in about three pieces. So not only is the plastic cheap and it cracks, but the chrome coating is cheap as well.
Well, at least now I can paint it without having to worry about it sticking to the chrome.
