"SN" 10W30 Full-Synth ok?

The owner's manual states SF/SG 10W40. Is SN ok? I've read that certain additive packages can be less than ideal for motorcycle transmissions.

SN is low ZDDP oil, stay away.
Go with a JASO MA rated oil like Rotella T6

I think I want 10W40 for an air-cooled bike? Especially in Florida.

check out the owners manual, it says thicker with more heat.
But in my tests, 40w kept the head cooler.

I hope we're not haggling over 10-40 verses 15-40 ?
In sub zero, I mite prefer the 10. In Florida I'd prefer 15

I'll look for 15W40 Rotella.

Just go to Walmart and buy the regular 10w-40 the manual recommends. Oils are much better than they were 30 years ago. Don't sweat it. The engine won't last more than 70k anyway, so don't waste your money on expensive oils...

My odometer says 14k, but I find that very hard to believe for an '86! Although, the rubber (cable boots, etc.) is in good shape. The paint is faded though. I dunno, 14k seems unlikely.

Major thing to remember is to HAVE SOME OIL in there ....

+1 on Rotella, it has all the good stuff we need and lacks the bad stuff that kills our clutches and if you buy it by the gallon (white jug is dino, blue jug is synthetic) you know you have an oil that has been well tested by us here on the list (and has become our favorite oil due to low cost and best benefits of any oil tested).

But in the end, remember rule #1,  HAVE SOME OIL in there ....

More engines die from lack of rule #1 than for any other reason.

And especially for any oil burners, to that I will add,........
If you use the side stand method of checking oil, and keep the oil near the low line, you will be carrying nearly a 1/2 qt more oil in reserve.

Big singles with over 15,000 miles do tend to sip a bit and have to be topped up bi-monthly (or in Verslagen's case mebbe bi-weekly).

What Routy is referring to is the side stand oil check method which is used more by our older members whose bikes all do tend sip a little bit.

If your bike is newer and uses no oil, you don't have to worry about researching it yet as you really don't NEED the side stand method yet.

Ya see, ya gotta flick the plastic worm out into the water and jest reel it back in real slowly, letting it bump enticingly off the bottom using little subtle tip jerks to give the wiggly plastic tail a realistic flipping motion ....
