I noticed the stock bars have quite a bit of weight attached inside the bars. What is the purpose of this weight? Vibration damping? Steering damping?

I added extra steel weights in the ends of my drag bars, made it feel even better to me. using epoxy and lead weights is another way to add some weight.

Reply #3 - 03/30/11 at 17:14:35 Meanwhile, over in the musclebike world, we've discovered that the best way to reduce vibration is to replace the rubber handlebar mounting cones with aluminum cones. It's counterintuitive, but it works. Guys who have tried heavier weights, shot, foam and all that finally came to the dark side and loved the results.

Actually it's not counter intuitive if you think about it. The rubber bushings allow the bars to move a bit. They are acting like a spring, and every spring has a resonant frequency. Up to and down to that frequency they will damp movement, but at the frequency they will amplify it. Adding weight to the bars lowers the resonant frequency, hopefully to below the exiting frequency (the motor). Eliminating the spring eliminates the resonant frequency, so vibrations are less.

A couple of wraps of electrical tape so that they snug inside the handle bar and you put the end caps back on. Mine been working for two years...and the cigars were good too!

I haven't tried a bar snake but I also changed the stock buckhorns for Sportster bars and risers and the bar weights I added made a difference.
I believe that you will like the Sportster bars a lot. My arms are at a more neutral position and I have better control of the bike.
