Newbie needs help with an 86 Savage....
03/29/11 at 00:23:37

I purchased an 86 Savage two days ago and it tops out at 60mph. Is this normal, and if so, where should I go to find performance upgrades? I'm a total newbie, I've only had quads and other OHV's in the past. I don't know where I should start....Please help...

So do you have any suggestions? The bike was well maintained. I purchased it from the original owner.

This bike should be able to get to 85 in stock form so there is definitely something wrong. Start trouble shooting by checking the spark plug, carb, petcock and fuel filter (inside the tank), vacuum line, and fuel line. Are there any other symptoms like smoke (blue/black/white), backfiring, popping, sputtering or missing? Is the fuel old? Has it been like that since you bought the bike?.....the name of the game is information

somethings stuck if you're only hitting 60mph...run some Seafoam through the carb. Check the throttle cable, make sure the brakes aren't dragging, etc etc
does it run through all the gears...4 on an '86

It runs through the gears just fine. It just has no power in 4th whatsoever. It does backfire when I shut er down occasionally and it did once when I downshifted from 4th to 3rd. I smelled what I thought was burning oil at a stoplight last night but the oil level was fine. Overall te bike just doesn't seem to have any uumph if you know what I mean. I know it's not a crotch rocket but for a 650, it's definitely underperforming.

2... How many miles?
3... Any taping by the oil filter?
Some unscrewpleous owner may have dumped the bike to avoid some repair cost.  check this out...

I'm in long beach, ca. There's no tape by the oil filter, but I'm gonna change the oil today and maybe pull the carb.

I'd also check to see if you have a flat spot on the throttle response in the other gears. If you crack the throttle open in 3rd and it seems as if the power falls off then I'm thinking it would be the main jet in the carb. Could be gummed up...

Yup,... it sounds like a partially plugged main jet, or stuck slide...
Pull the carb,... clean all the jets and passages, clean the slide and make sure it moves smoothly...
You'll be good... Wink...

Sorry, tapping, a noise or scrapping.

How many miles?

First, check to see that the throttle cable is adjusted correctly to open the carb all the way..........Do this WITHOUT the engine running....... Cool.....NOT  like my buddy Roll Eyes...

Then proceed to harder options. Undecided
