Oil change
03/21/11 at 09:47:50

Hey, Im new to the forum. I just bought my 1995 savage LS 650 last summer and absolutely love it.
Quick question. What is the recommended oil to use during the hot months of Spring and Summer? And any brands that are better than others? Thanks

If yours is like mine, the recommended oil viscosity is on the filler cap.

Brands? That opens a can of worms with no real answer.

Stay away from any oil with an energy star on the can -- energy star on the can means super slippery additives that can make your clutch slip.

Other than that, pick any 10w40 oil you like and change it at least once a year.   Do keep up with your oil level -- these bikes sip a bit of oil with that big jug and that big piston.

"Getting low" can creep up on you unawares without much effort on your part and getting too low on the oil level is the primary reason these engines die.

Getting lazy on your oil checks ain't recommended.

And I was about to commend Oldfeller for being so polite.  Then Bill had to come along....   LOL   Wink

But dhorn, you won't get much concensus when it comes to oil.  But you'll get lots of opinions!  At least we give lots of things to think about and decide for yourself.

Actually, I can still be all polite and nice as I really do think we have oil warred every possible topic to death at least twice, including oil levels and various methods of checking your oil level.

Key thing really is to have some oil in there ....

Besides, Bill apparently hasn't totally recovered from that last oil war

(he ain't said the K word even once)

Ahhhhhhh,....

Now now Serro -- no cursing out loud on the list you know -- bad form, not cricket, hip hip and a stiff upper lip and all.

Grin

Rotella comes in a dino 15w40 version in a white gallon jug which is perfectly good for your Savage (and it's cheap too -- if you can get into a Sams Club or other discount/wholesale place you can buy it in 3 gallon BIG jugs REALLY dirt cheap)  Walmarts everywhere sells it for about $11-12 a gallon in the standard white gallon jug.

The better stuff is the Synthetic Rotella 5w40 in the blue jug for about $21 a gallon for those with hot cams and big pistons that rag the piss out of their Savages.   For stock engines, white jug 15w40 is fine and is about half the price of the blue jug ritzy stuff.

Rotella does not come in a 10w40 here in the USA I don't think ...

Now lots of people on the list like to buy $13 a quart motorcycle oils in little quart bottles with a motorcycle on the label.  Yep, it does say JASO MA rated right on the label and that is a good thing.

If you look at a jug of Rotella (either kind) you will find the JASO MA motorcycle rating right on the label, listed right along with about every other rating for every other type of engine.

No picture of a motorcycle though, sorry -- just a very very good oil at about 1/4 as much $$ as the quarts of dino oil with the motorcycle printed on the label.

But remember, oil is oil -- not having some is what kills your engine.

I'm not familiar with Yugo's, would it be the 2nd one to the right?
They don't leave crap on the streets around here.

I don't know about Renault, but Cat don't like crap.
