Flames from muffler
03/21/11 at 09:36:34

04 savage 7400 miles

I recently put on a harley take off muffler from a softail and pops and backfires stopped.  I have stock air filter and carb.  As I came home last night, hit the highway 10 miles and once on the sideroads when I let off the throttle blue flames were constantly coming out lighting up the back of the bike.  Once parked, looking into the end of muff it was glowing red.  This can't be normal, I need to know what I need to do...

I do have on hand a K&N air filter, lancers jet set and dynokit with needle.

Before I changed mufflers, it would pop on decel here and there and maybe a shutdown poof.  Thanks for any help!

I also just swapped out for a Softail muffler and also have the glowing red!  Haven't noticed any flames shooting, but I haven't ridden at night since changing.  Hope you get some answers...

Serowbot asked me if it was a catalytic model, thinking that may explain the difference, but I don't believe mine is.  So I still don't know the answer.  The part number on mine is 65842-07.  What's yours?

My bike is '06 with about 7000 miles.  Stock filter and carb too.

Well there's good news and bad news.

Here's the good news.
No air leaks, great installation!
No shift or shutdown pops
grumble (decel) pops don't count

Bad news
tailpipe glows red
flames out the tail pipe, hey! wait a minute, that's just FN cool.  where do I get one?   Cool
probable cause, a tad rich in the idle mixture maybe.  Are you still getting a shutdown poof?  lean it up till you get a pow, then slightly richer.

I started riding Harleys in 1953 and stayed with them until 1970.
Back then we would twist the left grip c/c to retatd the spark and snap the throttle shut just to get the 12ga. shot-gun sound and flames out of the mufflers. We always burned Amaco white gas (unleaded) back then. Be happy, you got pop and flames!

Wife followed me about 20 miles on the freeway.  Said I had flames when I backed off, along with the standard Savage pops and growls.

I actually put a flamethrower kit on a Yamaha I built. It would throw 3 foot flames. The only bad thing was I mounted the button in between the risers.Push the button it kills engine and fires spark plug in the tailpipe...no problem.THEN let off button, back under power.Makes for a wild ride.....but it looked cool.

I know that looks good, but wern't you washing the oil film off the bore with raw gas coming in to a dead jug?  Just wondering.

babyhog, you have the same muffler as mine. Also comes off of Night Trains. Easy install and looks good. It is listed in Serowbot's muffler guide. Mine has what Verslagen describes as the "Grumble Pops". I don't ride at night, but I may take a spin tonight to check for flames.  Smiley

No pops or shutdown poofs anymore with this harley muff, just decel growls and 6'' blue flames  Cheesy

I was just concerned after turning off bike that the inside of muff was glowing red.
