Charging System?
03/18/11 at 07:56:37

Hello, all. I'm trying to figure out where the problem lies. Had a new, fully charged agm battery in a 99 savage. We went for a 30 mile, stopped to eat, and when returning to bike, it would not start. Jumped it and headed home; ran fine except it would backfire anytime she used signals to change lanes, etc. About half way home, it backfired a couple times and died. Trailered it home and starting checking it out. Battery is on the charger and tests good with my load charger. I'm thinking regulator or stator but I'm not sure exactly how to test them. What do you think?

UPDATE: Problem solved.

I always check the easiest, cheapest things first...
Check that the negative terminal, and the ground strap to the engine are tight.
Then check the kickstand cutout connection under the seat, and the clutch lever cutout on the left handlebar.
Unplug, clean, re-plug.

I should have stated originally that when the bike died, the battery was completely dead. I removed it at home at placed it on trickle charge.

Yep, it sounds like the charging system is the problem. These bikes won't run w/o 12v juice. And backfiring is normal when the ignition is starving for juice.

I don't know these bikes well, but normally stators should show continuity thru the coil, and should not show any continuity to ground.
If that checks normal, my guess would be a poor connection, or try a new rectifier/regulator.

Well, FWIW, here's what I've got. Got full charge on battery and reinstalled. The meter shows at rest with the key off: 12.48; with the key on bike not started: 12.04; started at idle: 12.00; here's the strange part, as I throttle up, the voltage drops the more I rev. It's not a consistent drop, it kind of bounces around, but it drops more the more I rev. What says you guys?

Check your magnetto (sp?) and your rectifier. The Clymer has a pretty straight forward 'how to' for checking those items.

Not good? lol  Not good as in bad R/R? Bad stator? or possibly both? I'll attempt to follow the manual but I only understand electrical crap and my meter enough to be dangerous. I hate troubleshooting this crap. I'm a much better mechanic than electrician. I was lucky to wire driving lights on my zero turn mower without screwing something up, lol.

I completed the "Charging System No-load Performance Test" from page 210-211 in the Clymer manual and the stator checked ok. Now check this out! I decided to check the mounting bolts on the regulator and found them a little loose. Now keep in mind I have over the fender saddle bags so the leather is between the regulator and fender. After tightening the bolts, I blow a main fuse every time I rev the engine. I loosened them and no problem with the fuse when I rev. I did this test over and over. Does this mean anything in regards to the regulator?

Normally that is bolted up hard on the fender.
So if you're isolating it and it doesn't short out,
and then you ground it does, kinda indicates this is your problem.
that the rectifier is burnt.
there is a test for that one, gotta go, so do your own search.

Thanks, I think. You didn't have to respond if you didn't want to. I'm aware is is normally bolted to the fender, I already stated that.  If I misread your response, I apologize, but it's responses like this that makes folks reluctant to post questions. If you recall, I explained that electrical was not my thing.
