question about oil level
03/09/11 at 19:01:45
So I just re-installed my clutch and generator covers on the bike after getting them powder coated last week. I looked at Clymer's and saw that the oil volume for complete overhaul is 2.1 quarts.
So, I added just over 2 quarts to the bike and there is no evidence of oil whatsoever in the oil sight window. I have not attempted to start the bike yet because its all taken apart for my RYCA kit. Should I add some more oil until I can see it in the oil sight window, or do I need to wait and start it up so it circulates around?

Oil level is supposed to be measured level, not on the kickstand.
On the kickstand, the level will be lower.
2 qts is enough as long as you remember to put the drain plug back in.

The bike actually is level, on a stand, which is why I am so surprised I do not see any oil at all in the sight window.
Yes, the plugs are in too. Nothing is leaking out of any of the gaskets from the covers I put back on either.

Lean the bike over towards the kickstand a bit,... you'll see the oil level.
You can't see it now, 'cause you're lookin' right through it... it's too clean...
The oil level covers the window completely,... once you crank the motor, filter and passages will take some, and the level will read near the middle of the site window...
Dirty oil shows up better...

Thats the only explaination for that one.
Just a note,..........
After a survey showing no ill effects, many of us run the oil level at the low line, w/ the bike on the side stand, which takes well over 2 qts.
This method allows for easier, safer, and more accurate oil level checks.
