Retiring the DR
03/09/11 at 17:39:24

Cheers all,

Age has finally caught up with me, alas.  The old legs can no longer hold up my top heavy DR 650.  I love it with a passion but the dance is over.  However, in life sometimes you are lucky enough to meet a new dance partner and continue to listen to the music.  I pick up my new S40 Saturday morning and say goodbye to the DR.  I know it will not run as fast as the DR right out of the box but I am sure it will be fine for me.  The low seat height will give these old legs a few more years of riding.  I have enjoyed reading the posts on this forum and will be contributing in the future.  I guess all I can say is "look ma, I'm still riding."

Welcome Walkingscar,
Congratulations on getting a new bike lined up.  I think you'll find the S40 has just as much (or more) of the same thumper character that makes the DR so "juicy"  and it is a lot easier to ride on the street.  I hope at 68 I'll still be riding too.. if not an S40/Savage, at least a scooter.  Cheesy

Walkingscar, I applaud you for still riding.
I don't care what size bike you ride. I think
it is great that you still plan to keep
getting in the saddle.
Your proof that ones age should not
stop them from enjoying life.
Hugs and make sure you post a pic
of you with the new bike.. Hugs... kim Smiley

Walkingscar, welcome to the forum and to the S40. Glad to see that you aren't giving up riding. I am disabled (arthritis and fibromyalgia) and ended up turning my S40 into a bobber since I have problems swinging my legs up over the tank. I just walk onto it now. Boule'tard, nothing wrong with a scooter, I bought a Burgman 650 for taking long trips on and keep the bobbed S40 for playing. Don't let age or disabilities keep you from riding.

Thanks, but I meant when I get to that age bracket, I hope I am in as good a shape as walkingscar1943.  I can still swing a leg over a DR650 for now.

Not that the Savage isn't good for youngsters too, but IMO its the only large cc bike that feels safer and more comfortable for us older riders. If I hadn't found this bike, I may not be riding, or it would have been a smaller cc, and not near as much fun !

After being off the Harley's for some years I bought an 07 S40 and rode it for 2 years and sold it a year ago and bought a Triumph Bonneville T-100.  I'll be 75 in 3 weeks and plan to ride awhile yet.
