Smoke form engine, should I worry or not?
02/21/11 at 13:42:34

I would like to get some feedback on my 96 Savage.   I got it used with 20K miles on it and it is fun to ride.
Attached is an image of the engine and where I have seen white smoke coming from it when the engine warms up(can't upload image, 1. it is between the top cover and cylinder head cover
2. between the the engine and muffler connect)
After reading many articles on here about smoke and the history of the oil leaks with this model I'm wondering if there is a problem or not.
I do cover the bike but I live in an open garage so it is exposed to the elements.
After washing the bike, I rode it to get any excess water out of the easy to access areas.
When it smokes, is equivalent to seeing smoke coming from a cigarette.  I have a short video of it showing it smoking.  I can post it on youtube or something.
If I need to get it repaired then I will, but if this is normal then I'm going back to work on it.

Any questions or feedback is greatly appreciated.

Only 3 liquids ever touch your bike... gas, oil and water.
Make sure it's not your tank leaking.
water will turn to steam, not a problem.
oil does smoke, and is not a problem till it's noticeable on other things... like your pants.

Just make sure you got oil in it and it'll be fine till the leaking oil is a nuisance.

Blowing smoke out of anything but the exhaust isn't normal. Whether you should worry about it depends on your attitude regarding the care and feeding of machinery. If you're the run-it-'til-it-breaks-then-throw-it-away type, then, no, don't worry. On the other hand, if you're the type that looks for early signs of trouble so you can correct them before things get worse, then, yes, you should worry.

My water tank is on the seat when I ride...... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
Riding causes 'moisture' to collect in the tank, which then has to be drained at fuel stops. Grin

If you are getting 'moisture ' on your bike from this source, STOP immediately, you're doing something wrong!!!!!!!! Shocked

Of course, certain highway situtations can occasionally cause this, in which case YOU ARE EXCUSED...... Cool
