It needs a compression release so as to allow the engine to get past the first compression cycle & allow the engine to get spinning before it comes up on compression again, after spinning thru the power, exhaust & intake strokes, getting the rotating mass up to speed, so that when it hits compression, it wont overload the starter & the gears it drives.
If ya dont let go of the comp release, well,, The Rowboat covered that.

My daughter's TRX 300 ATV has a manual decomp release on top/front of motor. You just flip it open and it shuts upon cranking. The thing is, it's better to use with the kick starter on a cold engine when the battery fails. I only tried it once to see if it worked, but it might be easy to burn a finger if the engine is hot. Just sayin'
