Manual decomp...

I've been thinkin' 'bout it...

Something like a carb tickle lever...

How long do you think I'd have to hold it open?... Huh...
Do you think it might kick back at your finger when you let go?... Huh...

There were bikes with what looked like a stubby clutch lever that actuated the decompression. I know on the Yamaha XS650 it also activated the starter.

You only need to open the decompression long enough for the engine to start turning -- so like a half second.

The Ryca conversion has a manual decompression lever that recycles the shift lever. It's mounted out on the front of the frame with a rod running up to the lever on the engine. But that wouldn't work for someone keeping the stock controls.

But I was thinking someone could make what looks like a small suicide clutch shift lever attached directly to the arm of the decompression mechanism. A chromed rod with a ball on the end could curve out around the tank and be easy to reach.

I can't remember the exact model but Suzuki had a 500cc single cylinder enduro with a manual decomp that looked like the old choke switches on the Yamaha XJ series bikes and was mounted on the handle bar. That would probably work on the Savage/S40

The problem with handlebar mounted decompression levers from other bikes is the old 1" vs. 3/4" bar thing.

A sawed-off second Savage clutch lever should do the trick. I imagine there are several places it could be mounted.

I'm just thinkin' of adding some kind of an extension directly on to the decomp lever at the head...
I think it would be cool to reach down and flick it, to start 'er up...

Maybe tack weld the end of a spoon to it... Huh...

Stylin'!... Uh huh... Grin...

It was Jonnyb's suicide shifter that got me goin' on it...

Combining a manual decomp with the starter button would be rad.

Can't wait to see the first one.

My old BSA's had a manual decomp it was a trigger unnder the twist grip which pulled a cable and slightley lifted one of the valves, I was looking at this with a view to the savage and it would be a relativley easy conversion although you also had to ajust the timing maunualy when kick starting get this wrong and the best you could expect was being launched over the bars and at worst damage to your ankle which I still feel in damp weather

What is the benefit/purpose of a manual decomp lever (not meant to be straight line for the comedians in the forum)?

Benefit would reduction in weight and complexity.
Also, you'd be able to push start or rolling start anytime.

Unfortunately, combining the decomp lever with the start button creates a difficulty, you have to squeeze the decomp button before pressing the start button and release the decomp lever while holding the start button.  Plus, unless you remove the clutch safety, you gotta hold the clutch in.  So if all safeties are to remain in place, the best place for the decomp lever and start button is for a right handed operation.  Most savages start w/o twisting the throttle so a frame mount would be acceptable.  Squeeze the decomp lever with the index and middle finger, squeeze the start button with the ring finger, release the decomp lever, holding the start button till it starts.

This may be a stupid question...

Why do you need to release the decomp lever while still holding the start button?
