Alright so here's my problem: my clutch slips under hard acceleration. So when I shift up and lay on the throttle hard, the bike doesn't actually shift up until I lay off the gas a bit. I had a mechanic look it over a while ago and after playing with the cable a bit, he suggested that I replace the clutch plates. BUT I did a bit of looking around in the forums here and found some alternatives. I tried a longer clutch rod (46.5mm) and that didn't help any.

I figured the next step would be to replace/clean up the plates. When I bought the bike the guy gave me a few parts, including a clutch (used, or dirty at least). I was considering using these plates, but I don't know what worn ones would look like. I included some pictures, tell me what you think:

I've got about 31000 miles on it, and the clutch has at least been tampered with before (the hub nut washer is bent up on one side).

Part of me almost thinks this is more of a carburetor issue though, because when I hit the throttle hard at all (even without changing gears) the engine makes a lot of noise but the bike takes a while to really start accelerating...

I guess it doesn't really tell me how many miles I have on the clutch though

yes I'd say yours are slipping.
check the adjustment on the clutch arm, make sure it's between the marks of the case.
next, you can add washers under the springs to boost the grip a little. there are little steps in the plate, so make sure they fit in. I'd try .030" thick.
or get some new Heavy duty springs.

Okay thanks for all the responses guys, sorry I took so long to get back.

I did a bit of reading, that helped a lot. Messed around with the clutch rods a bit, that didn't seem to do anything. I just bought some new springs that I'm planning to put in.

When I bought the bike it came with a whole (used I'm assuming) clutch. I've just gone through cleaning them as Oldfeller suggested, (they're just soaking in oil now) and I'm planning on swapping those in.

Problem is: I just went to take off the clutch nut, and I was able to take it off just by applying the front brake and twisting it off with pliers. Seems to me it should be a bit tighter than that! Anyone have a suggestion on HOW tight I should retighten it?

Oh and the oil I'm running: castrol 4T 4 stroke SAE 10W-40, and I was also using up some GN4 4 stroke SAE 10W-40 Tongue

Gotta fish scale? even a bathroom scale can be used if you're inventive.

measure your wrench from the center of the bolt to the center of you'll put the scale on the wrench in inches. divide by 12. divide 50 by that number and you have the number of pounds you need on the wrench.

Or go curl a 50 lb weight to calibrate your arm. Cool

I dont know if it was the spring, dirty plates, or the loose hub nut, but it's running GREAT now! I can just open up throttle and the bike responds. I swear, it's like a brand new bike! I didn't realize it was so bad until now. Thanks everyone, for all the resources and advice!
