Bike starts up, dies when I give it throttle
01/29/11 at 08:33:19

Bike starts up if I let OFF the throttle completely.. (I'm about 1/4 throttle when I hit the starter, then gradually let off until it turns on --- it wasn't always like this, but I think it started after we upped the jets)

It will sit there and idle all day long but if I give just a bit of throttle it dies immediately.

If I'm REALLY feeding it, it stutters and smokes from the cylinder head for a moment, then dies.

I let my boyfriend mess with it too much and now I don't know how to clean up after him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michelle

What jets did he put in?

Sounds like the jets are too big.

Most of us start with no throttle, and I think starting with is an indication of too lean.

I knew that was coming. Main is 152.5. Pilot I can't remember but I will go digging. Actually I am pretty sure its a 55. He replaced the airbox with a cone filter, too.

Any ideas on why it will start up and idle just fine but dies if I give it throttle?

Trippah, that depends on how much nuts I have to go through to fix it.  Cool

152 should be ok, but you're at sea level and have a cone filter, might have to go larger.

Starts fine and idles cause the pilot jet is right, leave that one alone.

Can't advise you on your sex life.   Cool

Before I go outside to shovel some snow, I'd make these two quick comments.  You should not have to open the throttle at all when starting the bike;pulling the "choke", actually an enrichening circuit I think should do the job when its cold. and if it is idling OK, when you twist the throttle, the needle slide is moved (raised) (hopefully) so perhaps yours isn't seated fully and floods the carb when you twist the throttle.

Best of luck, now I'll leave it to the experts to chime in..... Shocked

There's a brass washer that's supposed to go under the main jet...
I'll bet he left it off... Huh...

Hmm he upped the jets in September; I didn't have this problem until just a week or two ago.

How much larger on the main would you suggest?

checked to make sure your getting enough fuel?  tank could be low or could have the vacuum problem.. although it would probably eventually not start and idle at all if it was fuel blockage.  Does sound like a carb issue.. ya could take it apart and give it a good clearning make sure none of the rubber parts are not damaged in any way.  Check the plug to see if your running too lean or too rich.. How do the various choke positions effect the startup idle and running?  if it works better at half or full choke then might be running lean.. did you modify the spacer?  skrewing with the needle settings often can cause unpredictible behavior.
