Before you start in on your bike thinking you can do as good a job as that, get some clean, straight sheet metal & do it on that.

well said!
I bought a couple of cheap steel tv trays at good will and practiced before painting my tank. It also helps in fine tuning your colors and paint strokes

Make sure you get the spray handle for the can...it really helps with control and saves the finger! Practice, practice, practice....thats all I've done. I also warm up everything I paint too....helps it 'lay down' easier. And id you are gonna use a lacquer, make sure you use the green tape and no news paper...it will bleed through.

If I want a nice paint job, I do it in 4 steps.

Take parts off
deliver to painter
go get parts
reinstall

The painter doesn't always do the best job, but at least you can take it back for free usually and get it fix again and again until it's perfect... or the painter shoots himself in the head..
