What's it worth?
01/26/11 at 11:37:50

We are interested in selling our 1997 LS650P Savage. We have no idea what to ask for it. We bought the bike used in 2003 for $2500.00 and it only had 2,800 miles on it. I can't post pictures so I will have to be as descriptive as possible. It has the factory metallic red paint with the original decals clear coated over. No rust. No scratches. One small dent on the gas tank. The bike is stored in the garage so nothing is faded, it is still shiny. The exhaust pipe has some discoloration, but not the heavy blue color that some have because they left it at idle too long with full choke. Has the original complete tool kit and owners manual. I bought the bike for my GF to learn how to ride, as a beginner she never rode it in the rain, but she has dropped it twice, nothing is broken, every thing works. No modifications to the engine. We added a National Cycle Plexifairing 3 windshield  four years ago, OEM saddlebag bars, and Willie and Max small saddle bags. I do all of the maintenance my self (part of the reason I love this bike). At any rate, we got new BMW F650GS's in 2006 and do long distance touring and the Savage mostly sits in the corner, rode to the Post Office and the ice cream stand about once a week. When my brother comes up from Texas he rides it to get him around town. My step mother has offered a $1,000.00 for it. I don't want to sell it to her. I think it is worth more than a "Grand" and I'm afraid she will wreck it and damage the bike (she may even hurt herself), plus, she can only store it outside. Here it is:

-8,652 miles.
-Metzler 880 front and rear tires and new tubes with 500 miles on them
-front brake pads with 500 miles
-new brake fluid, bled system 500 miles ago
-Bike Master (Chinese) battery with 500 miles
-NGK spark plug with 500 miles
-OEM air filter with 500 miles
-oil and filter change in November of 2010
-cleaned gas tank fuel filter and cleaned gas tank. (the filter was not
 that bad, I expected worse)
-all adjustments by the book; clutch cable, rear brake cable, decom-
pression cable, throttle cable, valves, and drive belt
-total safety check, side stand kill, horn, lights, brake light front and
rear, headlight dimmer, and the big red kill switch.

Regards, Jim.

kbb says 1100 to 1500 in my area.
expected mileage over 20k, you're less than half that.

If I were buying I'd offer in that range for the stock bike regardless of the wear and tear items.  If the wear and tear items were less than half worn, I'd deduct for new replacement.

Windshield is a plus, but don't expect to get full value.  Bags to me are a item wears, limited life unless they're hard bags.  So expect less.

Sounds like you have all the maitenance issues handled so no need to deduct for neglect.

Only thing that would further deduct for but personally can't is winter storage.

good luck.

12-1500 sounds very fair, especially if the condition is as good as you say. Id up the asking price to $1750 and make it clear you're willing to haggle. Since you dont seem to have too much to haggle over you'd probably get on the higher end of 12-15 range.

If the dent isnt creased you might be able to get it to pop out with some dry ice. That'll eliminate that haggle point. Other than that the only thing sounds like mileage (ie 2800 is "low miles" to some people and "neglect" to others.

I've got one in Houston that could be a twin(or at least a litter-mate) over on the Marketplace
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1293792886

I started it out at $1500 and just dropped it to $1200 after a couple weeks with no response.

My $0.02 worth. As you are probably going to be responsible for maintenance in the future, I said 5K is a fair price. In reality, I don't like to sell to relatives or close friends as if something goes wrong, they think you knew it all the time and expect it to be fixed immediately for free. Max

Tank, that's pretty much our bike, even looks like the same windshield, just don't have all of those fancy touring mods..... We have come to an agreement. If my step mother takes the State motorcycle training course and passes it we will sell her the machine for $1,000.00.  I would like more than that but apparently demand for this bike is low. Thanks to all that replied to this post. Regards, Jim.
