weather and your recifier?

For those of you that have moved or uncovered your rectifier, how weather proof are they? Do they need a weather shield?
I am thinking of replacing the fender pillion with an open luggage rack, but I am a little worried about rain.
Any comments?

Some bikes (the Bonneville comes to mind) put the rectifier on the front of the frame, hanging out in the elements.

I had mine on the fender totally exposed for a while and got caught in a heavy rain without any problems.

Mine is on the mount that is attached to the muffler mount. It has been there for 2+ years and I have not had a single problem.
