Removing the fork protectors

So my new fork brace should arrive soon. I have the fork protectors and have been told they will have to be removed.
My question is does anyone have percise directions and pics to go along with how to do this?
Note I have some mechanical knowledge as I did change the oil and filter by myself.
Also would it hurt to remove these and ride the bike without them possibly before the fork brace arrives and is installed?

IIRC, I used a skinny little wood chisel. If you scratch the bottom of the groove, its no biggee, the brace is gonna cover it up.
