Cone Filter set up

I picked up a K&N cone filter that I plan on installing on my project Savage. From reading some prior threads I have seen a few cone filters set up with a PVC extension. Is this purely cosmetic? Is there any increased performance that can be gained by extending the filter away from the carb, perhaps in a different direction?

You want to have an extention as long as the rubber duct between the carb and airbox.  This will allow the flow to stabilize before entering the throat of the carb.  It will improve low rpm response.  If you want a shorter duct you will need to add a flow straightener.  See Diamond Jim's turbulator.   Cool
