Sure, if someone already wants to change out the controls and switches, 7/8" bars make perfect sense. I'm just trying to help those who might not have considered the implications of going to 7/8" bars.

old bike barn link is DEAD   Undecided

clip-ons for 1" handle bars and 38mm forks are impossible to find, except thru RYCA.

Would like to find an alternative source for these.

ANYONE?  Smiley

It is not hard to find 38mm clip ons and 1" bars - but you do have to buy quality stuff and won't find it in the cheap section in eBay.

You buy the clip ons in 38mm, and pay $ 20 extra to get them with 1" bars......easy-peasy.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the link. 1/8" more metal = $20 extra ??? Most clip-ons aren't that expensive. I can't justify the "extra" cost for 1" bars.

Vendors and manufacturers are basically forcing us to convert to 7/8" so we have to change out all the other stuff as well, generates more revenue for them. How convenient that they "also" offer all the stuff for a "complete" conversion to 7/8".

Although I wasn't referencing ebay, I did check there after trying other sources first. The ONLY place I could find was RYCA.

I'm probably going the clubman route to save the $$$ for GASOLINE.  Wink

(They don't hate you just because you have a bike that uses 1" handlebars).

It is a supply and demand thing.....most bikes that use clip-ons use 7/8" bars and have been for 50 years.  They make a lot of them in the 7/8" size and can spread the cost of setting up their tooling over a large quantity.

The 1" bars are Harley and Cruiser style....they really don't sell a bunch of them, and the folks that want 1" clip-ons is pretty limited.  The sellers have to spread their tooling costs over a low production run, and it adds cost of each piece.

the problem I have Dave, is 38mm CNC 7/8" bars run $30-50. Even 39mm CNC 1" bars for HD run the same price. But RYCA, the ONLY supplier I have found besides the Woodcraft you linked, want $150-175 a set for 38mm, 1" bars.

*just an observation - possibly a simple swap if we look at these bars and their components parts, how they couple/mate to each other. Just take the 1" bar clamps and mount them to the 38mm tube clamps. The pieces mate up using the same bolt patterns.

I may go that route, 38mm 7/8" set and a 39mm 1" set from the same vendor and save $75-100 bucks.

I ran clubmans for about 3 weeks. Didn't like the hand placement and went ahead and got clip ons. For what you pay for clubman  ($20 off ebay) it's worth the purchase to see if you like the riding position which was what it did for me. You just get better adjustability with clip ons. I ended up about an inch lower with alot more pull back angle once I put the clip ons on the bike. Before I ordered the clip ons I was gonna fab up a drag bar style setup with the risers flipped under the triple tree and see if I liked that. Ended up getting a set of clip ons for a good price from Casey so I scrubbed that idea

@DesertRat

I thought about going the same route. Picking up a set of 7/8 clip ons for 38mm forks and just sleeving the bars up to 1" wouldn't be all that difficult. And it would save you a boatload of money!

You bring up a good point......you have very little adjustment with the Clubman bars.

Even with clip ons...sometimes they just aren't comfortable.  After having the clip-ons for 2 years, I just felt the angle wasn't right and I had too much pressure on my palm hand between my thumb and index finger...if I wanted that pressure to go away I had to lean way forward and shove my elbows out.

I got some 7/8" steel tubing and welded in a 4 degree angle...so I could lift the outside of the bars up a bit - it helped a bunch and the bike now fits me a lot better and my hands don't get as tired.

Hey Dave,

Do you have a picture of that setup (7/8" steel tubing and welded in a 4 degree angle). I can weld, and that may be another possibility.

Not sure what the picture would show.....a 4 degree angle doesn't look like much.  It looked just like a clip-on handle with one end slightly bent.

Take an 18" long piece of 7/8" tubing, cut a 2 degree angle slice....then rotate one side 180 degrees and weld the tubing back together to make a 4 degree bend, and grind smooth.  The weld was just far enough from the end to allow the short end to fit in the clip-on bracket.

Yes.  The 7/8" controls are much smaller and less "cruiser" looking, and look more proper on a Cafe' bike.
