We all like to think we are self-reliant, but are we self-actualizing as well?

Let's see how we stack up as a group

(we know we all ride bikes, but have you ever ....)

It's something Scout Masters don't generally do, but that's OK you can certainly answer yes to the last one.

Personally I think that a manual transmission should count.  Grin

Depends on your definition of self-actualization. Are you thinking along the lines of Goldstein's view or Maslow's or something else?

Originally I went with Maslow's Heirarchy, but later on I got influenced some by Pirsig because he always worked on his own motorcycle and I couldn't find where Maslow even rode a bike.

Pirsig was a lot more shaded and complex than Maslow's simple list, he was the one who pointed out that you move from realm to realm as your life progresses and it is a sad thing to value yourself against goals from 2 realms back that aren't even available to you any more.

As we get older, we still need to advance ourselves in the realms that we move in -- lots of us aren't working (or in my case working hard) any more and our marriages and families are pretty much fixed and stable.  Old goals really don't apply much to me any more.

Our realms have changed over the years ....   some of us have things like this list that take up a chunk of our lives now.

yeah, a manual transmission counts jest fine

So we’re in the same general realm of things, though I tend more toward the Benjamin Hoff school of thought. I think self-actualization is preceded by self-awareness and self-direction. And I see self-actualization as a process more than a destination.

Self-actualization is, by definition, a very personal thing. My personality, my beliefs, my values, my point in life, my perspective, my goals, etc. It can’t really be measured by someone else’s checklist. Sure, sometimes I have to conform and play the game in order to reach my greater goals, but I do it as a conscious, self-aware, self-directed choice.

It's the toughest part of aging (next to increasing body dysfunction).  Self actualizing does include setting a goal and then moving towards it.  Pirsig seemed to say (to me) that I should be setting my own goals and that I should do as much of the work as possible to get there; set in a Zen like "in the moment."  Setting goals is always future oriented, the doing the task to move towards the goal the now, checking to see if we have moved closer to the goal the past.  A constant cycle (the mandatory motorcycle element Cheesy) and continuous adjustments leading Pirsig to go to the problem of what is real.   Shocked

Never rebuilt a basket case but I rebuilt a Hodaka several times, a Yamaho 650 twin and a Ducati Peso. When I use to shoot a lot back in the 70's I reloaded my own ammo. My best friend sharpens my knives and does a lot better job than I can. My son is building me a new computer as we speak. I paid for his education so I'm gonna put his little narrow a$$ to work. I guess all this makes me a semi self sufficient moocher  Grin

After reading about the self realization and self-actualizing I realized that I actually could use a beer so I moved forward into that goal Wink.

self actualizing

actual,, actual,,,

presently existing in fact and not merely potential or possible; "the predicted temperature and the actual temperature were markedly different ...

So, if someone isnt Self Actualizing, from whence does his actuality come, actually.. ?

If SELF actualization isnt all there is, then what else is there?
