Inserts or Needles on the Conn rod to Crank ?
11/25/10 at 06:25:46

Ok ok, I don't have a book ! But when I have a good motorcycle, and a good forum, maybe I don't need one ? Smiley

Anyway, is the conn rod and crank an assembly.....w/ needle bearings?
Or is the conn rod removeable,.....maybe w/ an insert bearing.

No,.....my conn rod is not clattering,.......I'm just concerned about what mite be happening while some here are cranking this thumper over w/ out any oil in it,.......for the sole purpose of trying to get a touch more oil out of the engine. If its needle, I wouldn't be so concerned, if it was insert, I'd be very concerned, and would never do it.

When you don't have a book, look for fische.

anyhow, it shows needle bearings.

The factory inserted needle bearings.

Which is why it can get away with such low oil pressure.

Too bad they didn't follow through to the cam bearings.

Wonder if there would be any way to fit needle bearings to the cam???

Maybe machine the cam brng. surfaces down, bore out the head for the races???

Hhhhmmmmmmm???? Cool

Thanks.
It has needle bearings, so I'd guess it won't kill it to run w/o oil for a few seconds,.....but there is lots a pressure on those little needles when it hits compression !
I'm surprised, the crank (3 pc) and the conn rod (1 pc) and all bearings are sold as an assy, but the individual parts are too. But I'd bet the shops are not capable of disassembling or assembling that crankshaft. It must all be a press fit proceedure at the factory,....I'd be curious.

You could do that for the end bearings, but the center one, not possible.  Best you could do would be to fit a set of bronze bushing halves.  Which would go a long way to repairing most of these.
