What is the proper Mirror shaft length?
10/25/10 at 15:44:30

Help!

I just acquired a 1999 Savage with one mirror (left side) that has  an approx 6 inch shaft.  It looks stock.  The right side was an obvious after market.  I ordered the right side mirror from suzuki and the shaft was near 9 inches long!  It is otherwise identical to the left.

Now I am totally confused.

Does anyone know the shaft length for the mirrors?

the right is longer than the left.

Wow!  Who would have thunk it!

Does anyone know the reason for this?  I do not think I have had any other bike with this kind of feature.

I am trying to contact Suzuki to obtain clarification on this issue.  I wonder if this is just a 1999 anomaly.

Mescepu, The microfiche from Babbitt's online shows not only two different lengths, but two different styles of mirrors for 1999. They range in price from $43 to $48. Of course, Savage riders don't pay over $20 a set for our mirrors, generally speaking. My Savage was wrecked and put back with Emgo mirrors before I bought it.

There were some years when the Savage was offered with either drag bars or buckhorn bars. Perhaps the different mirrors were for the different bars.

On my 1990 the right side mirror arm is shorter because the mount is 1/2" higher on that side as it it seems to be part of the brake master cylinder.  My bike has the drag bars but I don't think that makes any difference since my wife had a 2003 with buckhorns and had the same mirror mounts and different length arms.

Her bike actually came with the mirrors arms on the wrong sides so there was almost no hand clearance on the left side.  I had to disassemble the mirrors and rebuild them with the arms switched left to right.  You can't just trade the whole units.

Really?  Never heard that one.  But that would make sense on the different mirrors...

I just measured the length from the right side mount to the end of the handle bar (buckhorn) and it is approx 1 inch longer than the left side.

The right hand mount does not butt up on the throttle fixture.

Babbit said they are asking their stock room to pull mirrors (right and left) for 1999 and compare the lengths.

I installed the longer mirror and went for a ride today (great weather in upstate NY!) and I did not observe that the different length was a distraction.  It just looks strange when you look real close.

Issued solved!

Babbit ran my VIN and contacted Suzuki which verified the original mirror shaft for my savage.

Babbit verified that the mirror provided to me was "mis-packaged" and they have corrected the issue. Smiley
