Gas tank vibrating  more than usual
10/24/10 at 18:05:36

So when riding the 2009 S40 this morning (8,200 miles over the last two years, all with my fat *ss on the saddle) noticed the gas tank vibrating side to side more than usual once I hit 60 or so.  Bike seemed to be handling fine otherwise.  Solution for me was to pin the tank with my knees and keep riding, but as fond as I am of this little machine, probably not a long term fix.  How do I trouble shoot this? -- the only connection to the frame that was obvious to me is at the back of the tank where it marries up with the seat, and those two little bolts seemed snug enough...

As usual, much obliged for any responses...peace, carlos

The front part of the tank slides down around the frame around 2 rubber bumpers.  Wonder if the rubber is getting worn out?  I don't think I've seen anyone mention this before.

I hope it isn't related to the oil change I did a few hundred miles ago (Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w-40 Diesel Engine Oil).  Chose this oil because it was on sale for $7 a gallon and had a nice picture of a big rig on the front.  Sorry for the non-sequiter, just couldn't resist given the oil arguments that rage on this forum

have you had the tank off ?  I dropped one of the aforementioned rubber pads on the floor while reinstalling my tank once ( the rubber pad slips over a metal peg sort of thing)  - it kind of shook & vibrated more until i realized what had happened

i don't think the pad could fall out unless the tank was off or at least very loose

?

Jest for the giggles of it, check the motor mounting bolts top, back, middle and front.   Two of them mount your footpeg bracket and are notorious for getting loose and allowing a lot of extra engine vibration to go into the entire frame, gas tank (speedo) and head light.

Thanks for the excellent replies.  will examine for the front tank bumpers but hard to see how they could be bad on an 09 but i suppose they could have slipped a bit or something.  Will also check the big engine bolts for tightness.

per the diesol engine oil, it was cheap and the technical fine print read like it'd be fine (no anti friction agents mentioned, and the clutch is shifting better, although i thing the prior oil was really cooked after a summer of really hot weather).  May go ahead and use the rest of the jug as soon as the oil discolors to really clean out the innards but this machine has had 4 oil changes over two years/8,000 miles so that may be overkill

peace all, carlos

If you're gonna' say things like non sequitur on here I'm turning my family filter on. My money is on the rubber grommets on either side of the frame. They make no noise dropping on grass and even less on concrete. When I remove the tank I just put a wad of glue, silicone sealer or whatever on the back of those and stick them on. By the time I am finished with my maintainence they are affixed so as to not fall off.
