What's the best way to prepare a chrome exhaust pipe for high heat black paint?

Fairly coarse 180 to 220 grit silicone carbide wet or dry sandpaper (sanded wet and a lot of it in a criss-cross fashion) -- you need lots of scratches for the paint to adhere well.

Might work to have the chrome sandblasted off, then have the pipe powder coated.

Maybe leave your header alone & have one made at a muffler shop. Then paint it.

Now to answer your question. What I did with mine was wire wheeled (with my bench grinder and a mini grinder) the chrome enough to see the change in material. Your removing the chrome plate layer. Then I painted with VHT silica-ceramic header paint. Do the curing according to directions and it comes out very durable.

Jef, when I did mine I used a media blaster like a sand blaster took all the chrome off then painted with high temp paint.

Dang, Edgar, thats gonna vary, shop to shop. Id expect a whole exhaust to be pretty spendy, but if youre willing to just get a header & poke a muffler on it, then it shouldnt be too crazy.

What you could do is have an entire pipe and silencer made of titanium and ceramic coated inside and out. Or just heat paint the stock pipe.
